Do you see people with beautiful skin and wonder what their secret is?
How do they get that smooth complexion, even colouring and healthy glow?
The answer to that question is different for everyone. But they probably start their skincare routine with double cleansing.
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing is a two-step cleansing method that became popularised in Korea.
The method is designed to give your skin a deep and thorough cleanse, removing all the makeup, SPF and impurities that have built up on your skin during the day.
The double cleansing method
The double-cleansing method uses two steps to give your face a refreshing cleanse and ensure your skin and pores are thoroughly clean.
1. Oil-based cleanser
You start the process with an oil-based cleanser, which dissolves oil-soluble impurities without stripping or dehydrating your skin.
Apply the oil-based cleanser to dry skin. Then wet your fingers with lukewarm water and gently massage your face, using circular motions. This will break down oils and impurities, like makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum.
Finish this step by using lukewarm water to rinse the oil-based cleanser away, then gently pat your face dry.
2. Water-based cleanser
The second step is a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining water-soluble residue, like dirt and sweat.
Apply the water-based cleanser to damp skin, then rinse with lukewarm water and gently pat your face dry.
Why use the double cleansing method?
Double cleansing isn’t just another skincare trend. It’s a method that makes perfect sense for cleansing today’s skin.
Modern skin applications, like our daily makeup and SPF, are formulated to last, but this can make them stubborn to remove. When you add sweat, pollutants and skin debris to the mix, cleansing becomes even more challenging.
Unlike some other methods, double cleansing is designed to be gentle and doesn’t require you to rub at your skin, or use harsh products that strip away its moisture.
The benefits of double cleansing
There are a number of reasons why double cleansing is good for your skin.
Effectively removes makeup and SPF
Today’s makeup and SPF can be difficult to remove, especially if they’re waterproof.
This is where the oil-based cleanser is so effective, as it dissolves your makeup, SPF and any build-up of sebum underneath it. And it leaves your skin clear for the water-based cleanser to remove any remaining dirt and impurities.
Minimises pore clogging
If you don’t cleanse your skin properly, impurities can remain. These impurities can mix with dead skin cells and your skin’s natural oils, clogging your pores and leading to breakouts and dullness.
Double cleansing thoroughly cleans your pores, leaving your skin clearer and smoother.
Helps your skincare products work more effectively
Double cleansing clears your skin of any residue build-up, leaving it fresh, clean and absorbent. This allows your skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin, where their active ingredients will be most effective and have the most benefit.
Gives you smoother, brighter, younger looking skin
Regular double cleansing improves your skin’s texture, brightens your complexion and prevents premature ageing. And it leaves your skin feeling soft, refreshed and rejuvenated.
Who can benefit from double cleansing?
Double cleansing isn’t just for people who wear makeup every day or people who have skin problems. It’s about giving your skin a deep and thorough clean, so it can actually benefit anyone.
When should I double cleanse?
The best time to double cleanse is at the end of the day. This is the time when you’re removing your makeup and SPF, or cleansing your face, just before you start your evening skincare routine.
Double cleansing your skin prepares it, so it’s ready to absorb all the active ingredients in your skincare products. When your skin is fresh, those ingredients can penetrate deeper and do more good.
How do I double cleanse for my skin type?
Double cleansing can work for any skin but, to use it successfully, you need to understand your skin type and choose the right combination of products.
Double cleansing for oily and acne-prone skin
If you have oily skin, you might think using an oil-based cleanser will only make it worse, but that’s not the case. The oil in the cleanser works to dissolve the oils on your skin from your makeup and excess sebum.
Double cleansing helps to balance your skin’s natural oils, so it feels hydrated without feeling greasy.
Choose a lightweight oil cleanser that’s non-comedogenic and won’t block your pores.
Look for water-based cleansers with:
- A lightweight gel or foaming formula
- Soap-free, non-comedogenic formulas
- Salicylic Acid (BHA), which clears sebum and congestion from deep inside the pores
- Niacinamide, which helps to regulate sebum production.
Double cleansing for dry skin
For dry skin, you need products that are nourishing and hydrating.
Look for oil-based cleansers containing:
- Argan oil,
- Camellia oil,
- Jojoba oil,
- Shea butter, or
- Sweet almond oil.
Choose a water-based cleanser in the form of a hydrating cream, foam or gel.
It’s best to avoid anything that will be harsh on your skin as this can cause redness and flaking. Use lukewarm water, apply the cleansers gently with your fingertips and pat your skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
Apply your moisturiser while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture.
Double cleansing for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin needs gentle, fragrance-free products that are hydrating and nourishing. Look for products that have been specially formulated for sensitive and reactive skin.
Oil-based cleansers containing:
- Emulsifiers, so they rinse away completely
- Oils that support and protect the skin barrier, such as squalane, sunflower seed, rosehip, or safflower
- Soothing and calming ingredients, like vitamin E, ceramides, or amino acids.
Water-based cleansers with:
- Formulas free from soaps, sulphates, and alcohol
- Low pH or pH-balanced formulas
- Cream, milk or non-foaming gel textures
- Ingredients that support and protect the skin barrier, such as ceramides, glycerine, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide or oat extract.
Why understanding your skin type is so important
Whether you’re double cleansing, doing your daily skincare routine or booking your next facial treatment, it helps to understand your skin.
This is because everyone’s skin is different and what works brilliantly for some skin types can worsen problems in others. It’s also why the products other people recommend might not work for you.
To get the healthy, radiant skin you want, you need to give your skin what it needs most.
