Why do I need a skin care routine?
Our skin is our largest organ, it is constantly exposed to environmental irritants, pollutants, and threats, it works hard to keep us well and yet many neglect their skin. I regularly hear clients saying, ‘they’ve no time to look after their skin’, but a good skincare routine doesn’t need to take more than a couple of minutes morning and night and doesn’t need to cost a fortune, by sticking with the routine you will soon see the results of those few minutes a day with clearer, fresher, younger looking skin which in turn will leave you feeling amazing.
There are many benefits to having a routine here are my top five.
1. Slow down the signs of ageing
A good skincare routine will strengthen the skin for the ageing process, when we are in our 20s, we have good levels of collagen however as we approach menopause the collagen production slows, collagen is responsible for giving skin strength and a plump appearance.
For many pigmentation becomes an issue, the use of an SPF regularly will prevent pigmentation and many brands include it in their moisturising products.
2. A skincare routine will save you money
Looking after your skin from an early age will save you money on more invasive treatments later in life. Also, having a clean, clear skin will require less make up products as you’ll want to show off your complexion.
When you look good you feel good, your face is the first thing people see, having a clear, youthful appearance will make you feel confident and good inside.
4. Skin is constantly renewing
Our skin is shedding cells daily, a quality skincare routine works deep into the layers of the skin ensuring new cells come to the surface as healthy cells. Skincare needs to be used consistently to keep the healthy appearance. When switching skincare, it takes weeks before results start to show, I advise my clients to take a photo before starting a new routine and at weekly intervals, the diary is a great tool to remind you how far you’ve come and ensure the new products are working for you.
5. Healthy habits
When your skin is looking fresh and clean from following a new routine, you’ll want to look at other ways to keep your body feeling and looking well, introducing new diet and exercise routines to complement the skincare routine.
To find a skincare routine that’s right for your skin type work with your skincare expert or dermatologist, they’ll help you identify your skin type and recommend products to support it. A good start is to regularly use a cleanser, toner, moisturiser and SPF.
